wow, i've lived a pretty full life, so far. i got a c! and obviously fashion holds nothing for me. i've completed fashion. and i'm spent.
as of last thursday i now own a kitchenaid pro 600 stand mixer, a set of calphalon katana series knives (just the japanese ones, aka nakiri, honesuki, and two santokus, 5" and 7"), metalocalypse season 2, a frontalini learner accordion (my mother's from about 50 years ago), a painting of the champs-elysees and the arc de triomphe that was my grandmother's for the last 40 years or so, and some skinny black ties. i'd say christmas was good.
i've already put the mixer to good use. i've made three buttermilk chess pies and bought the grinder attachment to grind some venison for venison chili (it was a big hit). i made chicken pot pie last night, but i cheated and used store bought pie crust. i bought a french style rolling pin last night, though, so next time it'll be all home made (i hate making pie crust).
anybody want to loan me a few thousand dollars so can buy the mini of my dreams?

5:23 pm - i can't believe i'd never seen the uncensored version of that scene in fast times at ridgemont high
|
and you should know exactly what scene i'm talking about. well, if you're a guy over the age of, say, 25, you should know. phoebe cates was such a hottie. i think they're better than i ever imagined as a kid.
also, liming wax smells really good. but putting paste wax over it is a pain in the ass.
the new lens is as awesome as expected. i guess i should get around to putting up some pictures soon. heh.
tomorrow our new tempur-pedic mattress and platform bed arrive. now i'm really never going to want to get out of bed.

so i haven't updated since july, and i have no idea why that is. i mean, i read this thing every day. my friends list is still my homepage, at least on firefox (safari gets suicide girls). so let's see...
we moved into the new house and will make our second mortgage payment just before the election. we're still getting things unpacked and situated (we're lazy/have no time to spend on such things), but now we have a deadline: amy's family is coming here for thanksgiving. but we've got the important things set up. the stereo sounds great up in the loft, the new sheets and comforter look great in the bedroom, and our lawn is complete with obama/biden sign.
music work is up and running. i recently gigged at temple israel for rosh hashanah and yom kippur. temple israel is a reformed synagogue, so a non-jew in the choir is certainly fine. i was very impressed by the focus on the family unit and the congregational family. and for yom kippur the sermon focused on atonement between fellow human beings, not to god, with an emphasis on personal accountability. it was certainly a refreshing perspective from the typical protestant rhetoric i grew up with.
photo work is building. i photographed the blues ball for vip magazine, where i met BUZZ ALDRIN (if you follow me on twitter, you heard all about it). i may be shooting the december cover for vip as well. and i shot my first jewish wedding last weekend. between that and the singing, i have to admit, jews definitely have more fun. maybe i'll convert? probably not, but you never know. anyways, i have another wedding coming up in november, possibly two. and i'll be buying some new equipment this week. first is the 24-70 f/2.8 nikkor. i've been playing with it for a week now (lensrentals.com is local!), and i'm pretty set on it now. second is a pocket wizard for wireless flash triggering. and down the road i'll pick up the 70-200 f/2.8 vr and the new 50 f/1.4 af-s, assuming sample photos show a marked improvement over the d version i have now (still my favorite lens). and maybe if i have enough i'll buy the 14-24 f/2.8 before europe next summer (or i could just rent it. that lens is pretty crazy).
i guess that's about it. i'm pretty sick of politics these days. i'm just ready for all of it to be over with. i'll probably vote early, and i'll certainly vote for obama. unfortunately i live in one of those "red" states where my vote won't really matter. and yeah, i've read all the positives and negatives of the electoral college, and i can't say direct elections would actually be better, but dammit, it would sure make me feel better. also, when did socialism become a bad thing, and anti-american thing? apparently it's not a bad thing when it helps the rich. but that's fodder for another post.
at least stewart and colbert have lots of good material lately. and i think i love david gergen, too. and if mccainpalin becomes president, i'm definitely leaving the country.
here's the way i see it (and i've mentioned this in comments on other people's lj's). by the time of the 2012 election, the republican party will undergo a split. the more moderate reps will have finally had enough of the neocons ruining the party's name, there will be a big falling out, a lot of name calling, someone's belongings will end up on the front lawn, and then who knows? maybe the libertarians will be the next major party. it's going to be interesting to watch.
oh, and i have two flickr accounts now. one is for parties, events, weddings, shows, etc., and one is for the goods.

yeah, i'm tired now.

4:02 pm - a small update
|
this weekend i shot my first solo wedding with the d3. not once, NOT ONCE did i even think to put a flash on the camera. what the hell do i need flash for anymore! i'm still in post on those images, so nothing to see yet. so far, so good, though.
sunday we had our annual amy's birthday blowout. it was a prom theme this year, and i think it was our most successful party yet! we even set up the studio for prom portraits, so once the wedding shots are done, the party pictures will go up (probably on facebook, but i'm starting a new collection on my flickr for photos of friends).
and yesterday instead of cleaning up the house we decided to go shopping. we got amy a lot of new clothes (weddings pay well!) and we both got some new running shoes. i was going to at least post a picture of the new kicks, because, well, they're bad ass. i found a pair of new balance 410's in blue and yellow. but i have yet to find a picture of them online. just use your imagination, or come hang out with me sometime.
time to eat.

7:04 pm - home, home on the...home is where the...there's no place like...a house?
|
amy and i have been looking at buying a house for a little while now. we're both tired of wasting money on rent, and in this market why shouldn't we be looking to buy? we have to stay in memphis for at least five years anyways (aesthetics licensure requires five years of work to gain reciprocity in most other states) we figure it wouldn't be a bad investment.
of course we have space requirements. the two bedroom apartment we're in now is large, but it's still a little limiting for all of our stuff (yes, we are trying to thin things out, but there's a lot of furniture that gets in the way, too). since i'm trying to delve deeper into my photography, a studio space like the one we have currently (the extra bedroom) is a must have. i'd also love to have room for a darkroom. we have a california king size bed and another bed, queen size, in storage. we don't mind getting rid of the king and using the queen (believe me, what the queen lacks in size it makes up for in comfort). and now that we cook a lot at home, we both want a bigger kitchen and room to entertain.
so we've been looking all summer long. if any of you have been looking for a house as well, you know the market is wide open (ok, at least it is in memphis), so there's a lot of choices. we put a price cap at $140k and stuck to the midtown area. amy's mom gave us a $10k loan for a down payment (not huge but a big help nonetheless), and amy's grandma is our agent (she works for crye-leike). so we're all set.
and we found something! funny thing was, it was the first house we looked at. i dropped a friend off at a house across the street, saw the sign, grabbed the info sheet and showed it to amy. we set up a walk through and were immediately sold. so was amy's grandma. as soon as we were back in the car together she asked us if we wanted to make an offer. and we did--$130k. the house was listed for $144.9k, so we were expecting a counter. we got a counter of $!40k, within our budget, but we were advised to hold off for a bit.
we looked at a few other houses, one that was really nice and in a great area and in the right price range, but it was a little small. of all the other houses we looked at it was the best, though. still, nothing was better than that first house. we wanted to wait till it had been on the market a little longer so that the owner might change their mind a little on the sale price. then we got word from grandma that the lady had decided to take the house off the market and rent it out. grandma talked to the lady about selling again. she said she wouldn't go lower than $137k if she were going to pay $3000 of the closing costs (part of our original offer). She'd be willing to go to $134k if we paid all the closing costs. we thought it over and....
WE SIGNED THE CONTRACT TODAY!
here is the house, for the curious. we have a house! well, assuming the closing goes well, and we don't see any reason it shouldn't. it's like we're mmmm, um, mmmmmm, uh, maaaa, yeah, whatever. we're happy!
